“Susie studied English Literature and Language at University before working in publishing in Edinburgh and London. She has always been drawn to making art for similar reasons that she loves books: escapism, imagination and a spark of shared connection.
Drawing parallels between the narratives of literature and the visual storytelling in her paintings, she explores the relationship between landscape, memory, and the emotive power of the Scottish landscape.
Painting instinctively and loosely, increasingly leaning towards a more abstracted interpretation of views most familiar to her: the Munros, lochs and beaches of the Highlands. She loves the creative exploration of complex, contrasting layers evoking the dramatic light and moody atmosphere of the Scottish landscape; she uses paint, charcoal, gold leaf and occasionally old maps to achieve this.
“As my children are growing up, I’ve been able to give more time to my own art. I spent four years at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh before setting up my own studio, where I am often to be found with my dog Harley by my side. I have exhibited and sold my work in Scotland and the rest of the UK via galleries, studio sales and bespoke commissions.”
